Harry Potter Moon Sign Archetypes

One of my favorite things to do when studying astrology is to find patterns and sort information. I love understanding what influences people, and these patterns help me communicate, connect, and observe the people in my life more clearly. I created the Archetype Archive as a place to organize those observations in a more lighthearted and entertaining way. While these posts still have depth, they are presented through a more modern and accessible lens. Everything here is purely opinion-based and reflects the archetypes I personally associate with each zodiac placement, based on my own studies, observations, and experiences.

Harry Potter is an absolutely brilliant universe of fictional characters with complexity sprinkled throughout the entire zodiac belt. The series is so brilliantly written, and the world is incredibly magical. I remember reading the books for the first time and genuinely thinking Hogwarts was a place where I could belong. I wish there was a Slytherin/Gryffindor hybrid because I'm too bad for Gryffindor and too good for Slytherin. 🤔

ANYWHOOODLES.

My point is that these books contain some of the most definable and carefully crafted characters in fiction. They effortlessly showcase the moon signs. I had a lot of fun with this one because I ended up throwing myself a few curveballs along the way.

Without further ado, here are my Moon Sign Archetype opinions for the magical Harry Potter universe.

Aries: Bellatrix Lestrange

I know, I know. You didn't think I was going to start with curveballs on the very first sign.

WELL HA.

I did.

But stick with me on this one.

I want to acknowledge that I think Scorpio Moon is an honorable mention here, and I think the connection comes from the fact that Mars rules both signs. As for why I chose Aries, the subtle ways Mars energy shows up when I look closely feel much more Aries to me.

Bellatrix isn't out for power or fame. All we really know is that she enjoys the chase. The sport of being a Death Eater. That feels very Aries coded. I think if there were hints throughout the story that she was seeking revenge or holding a grudge against Harry, we could make a stronger argument for Scorpio Moon. In this case, though, the emotional attachment seems much more connected to exhilaration than to any deep emotional fixation on another person.

She also strikes me as someone who acts first and thinks later. Bellatrix is impulsive. Emotional. Reactive. When she feels something, she moves on it immediately. There is very little strategy in the way she expresses herself. She charges into situations headfirst and seems to enjoy the chaos that follows.

She's an Aries.

Taurus: Hagrid

Oh, our beloved Hagrid.

Let's start with the fact that he lives alone in the forest with his animals, which I might add he is so, so, so loyal to. Hagrid is not interested in status, power, or recognition. What he loves are simple things. His home. His creatures. His friends.

Just look at Buckbeak. Even after Draco got himself injured, Hagrid never stopped fighting for that animal. Right or wrong, Hagrid remains loyal to the things he loves. Let's also not forget that this man literally got himself wrapped up in a dragon dealing scheme because he wanted a dragon. Then he got attached to it and looked shocked when everyone pointed out that keeping a fire-breathing dragon next to a school might not be the best idea.

There is also a stubbornness to Hagrid that feels very Taurus. Once he has made up his mind, good luck changing it. He trusts his own experiences more than other people's opinions. For someone living in one of the most magical places imaginable, Hagrid spends surprisingly little time worrying about the bigger picture. While everyone else is focused on prophecy, politics, and power struggles, Hagrid is busy trying to raise dragons, save hippogriffs, and grow oversized vegetables.

Gemini: Draco Malfloy

Draco is the shadowy a-hole side of Gemini, and don't even @ me talking about how you're a Gemini Moon and not an a-hole. This is why exact degrees matter so much because Ardra manifests as such a different energy than Punarvasu.

Ardra is the Nakshatra ruled by Shiva and symbolized by a teardrop. Maybe that's why Draco is such a little crybaby?

LOL. I'M KIDDING.

What the energy really comes from is his mind constantly overthinking everything. I think it's clear from their first meeting that Draco compares himself to Harry, and when rejection happens, he takes it personally. Throughout the series, he constantly measures himself against Harry and seems unable to let it go.

But the most Gemini-coded part of that really is the overthinking. You can see the Gemini duality in his demeanor. On one hand, he is extremely confident and outright rude. He's constantly reminding Ron how prestigious his bloodline is and how he's just a red-headed Weasley. But on the other hand, I think there is a lot of insecurity, self-doubt, and perhaps even pain. Draco spends so much time worrying about appearances, reputation, and how he measures up to others that it creates a constant tension beneath the surface.

Of course, I can only draw my own conclusions here since much of that is implied rather than directly highlighted in the story. But for me, the combination of comparison, overthinking, insecurity, and mental turbulence makes Draco one of the clearest Gemini Moon placements in the series.

Cancer: Harry Potter

The Boy Who Lived.

I think a lot of people would put Harry as Leo Moon, but Harry isn't particularly showy. He's humble, he's kind, and his entire existence revolves around family. Honestly, Harry spends half the series collecting parental figures like Pokémon cards because the poor kid is so desperate for a family connection.

He spends so much of the series trying to understand the missing pieces of his own family and where he belongs. The loss of his parents shapes nearly every major decision he makes. Even when he finds connections through Sirius, Lupin, the Weasleys, or Dumbledore, there is always a part of him searching for home.

I think Cancer gets a bad rap. They are deeply emotional, fiercely loyal, and highly intuitive. Yes, Cancer Moons can have mood swings, and you can absolutely see that in Harry. His emotions often drive his decisions. His loyalty can also bring out anger and a ferocious desire to protect the people he loves and defeat those who took his parents away.

More than anything, though, Harry's motivation is rarely glory. It's connection. Friendship. Family.

Leo: Cedric Diggory

Now, when you see someone like Cedric, it's much easier to understand why Harry is not a Leo Moon.

Cedric naturally draws attention wherever he goes. It's effortless. He's handsome, talented, popular, athletic, and somehow manages to be good at everything without becoming completely insufferable. I have to wonder if that's why they killed him off. He's just TOO perfect, and the wizarding world simply could not handle such a force.

Cedric is one of the few characters who seems completely comfortable being admired. An entire school is cheering for him, talking about him, and watching his every move, yet he never seems overwhelmed by it. At the same time, he doesn't beg for attention or chase it. He doesn't need to. It naturally finds him. He doesn't run from the spotlight, but he doesn't force himself into it either. He simply steps into it.

Virgo: Hermione Granger

This is one of the characters where the stars align clearly. See what I did there? Hermione is textbook Virgo, and I wouldn't dare change her up on y'all.

Most people look at Hermione and think, "Oh, she's smart." And yes, she is. But there are plenty of smart characters in Harry Potter. What makes Hermione different is that she genuinely cannot relax until she understands something. If there is a problem, she researches it. If there is a test, she studies for it. If there is a mystery, she investigates it. If there is a rule, she probably knows it better than the person enforcing it. Hermione doesn't like leaving things unfinished, unanswered, or unorganized.

Honestly, I think one of the most Virgo things she ever did was get herself a Time Turner so she could take more classes? Who does that? Most students are trying to get out of homework. Hermione found a way to create more of it. And before my Virgo Moons start yelling at me, yes, she can absolutely be critical. Hermione notices everything. The good, the bad, the inefficient, the poorly planned, and the completely avoidable. If something could be done better, trust that Hermione has already thought about it.

Libra: Fleur Delacour

There’s always one placement in every universe that is the most challenging for me to identify. In this case, it was Libra.

It’s not that “Libras aren't there”. Quite the opposite. I think Libra energy is everywhere in the wizarding world. The problem is that Harry Potter is a story built around conflict. There are dark wizards, prophecies, wars, power struggles, betrayals, and giant spiders that absolutely should not exist. Libra naturally tries to create balance within chaos.

I tossed around a few different characters before landing on my final choice. Fleur Delacour.

At first glance, Fleur can come across as arrogant, but the more I thought about her character, the more Libra themes started appearing. She is one of the most Venusian characters in the entire series. But what really sold me was the Triwizard Tournament. Fleur failed the second task and wasn't even comfortable accepting the points she was awarded afterward. This chick wouldn't even take the damn points.

And then there is Bill. After he is attacked by Fenrir Greyback, everyone assumes Fleur will leave because of his injuries. Instead, she doubles down on her commitment. She doesn't care that he looks different. She loves him anyway. Fairness. Partnership. Love. That's Libra.

Scorpio: Severus Snape

Severus is short, controlled, and straightforward on the outside. He speaks plainly, he's direct, and there doesn't seem to be much personality wise. Or is there?

I mean, a-hole certainly comes to mind. But really, Severus Snape's entire grumpy prick demeanor is because Lily loved James. His life revolves around that wound so much that even after Lily and James are dead, he still punishes Harry for it. Now that's a Scorpio grudge. I think his role as a Death Eater is also complicated. He’s basically a double agent that ends up spending years protecting Harry, who is half the woman he loved so deeply and half the man he hated.

So before you jump to the conclusion that Scorpios are heartless, remember that he did all of this because of how deeply he loved Lily. That's the thing about Scorpio. People focus on the sting and forget what caused it in the first place. Think about what a scorpion does. It buries itself in darkness. That's where it feels most comfortable. Scorpios are often drawn to what is hidden, complicated, and difficult to confront. They don't usually attack for no reason. But get too close to a wound they haven't healed, and they'll sting.

Sagittarius: Albus Dumbledor

Dumbledore is one of those characters where I could probably make an argument for three different signs depending on what part of his personality we're looking at. But every time I come back to him, I land on Sagittarius.

I have a few points to make here, the first being that Dumbledore is never focused on the immediate problem. Every time Harry asks this man a direct question, Dumbledore responds with a philosophy lesson. Dumbledore seems far more interested in wisdom than knowledge. Lots of characters in Harry Potter are intelligent. Dumbledore is wise.

He is also one of the greatest teachers in the entire series. And I don't just mean because he runs Hogwarts. Dumbledore spends the entire story acting as a mentor, guide, and teacher to the people around him. The funny thing is that he rarely teaches through direct instruction. Most of the time he creates situations where people have to discover the lesson themselves. Which, if we're being honest, would drive most of us insane.

Harry spends half the series begging this man for answers, and Dumbledore is off gallivanting Merlin knows where. He also isn't exactly easy to get ahold of. But that's exactly why I see Sagittarius. The lesson is always more important than the answer.Like many great Sagittarians, you never really know where the hell he is. He may disappear for months, answer a question with another question, and leave you more confused than when you started. But when it matters most, he's there exactly when he needs to be.

Capricorn: He who must not be named

Capricorn Moons know exactly who they are, so is any Capricorn Moon reading this actually surprised? Power, status, legacy, achievement, control. I mean, his power made such an impact that people won't even say dude's name. Very Capricorn.

Voldemort doesn't just want something. He dedicates his entire existence to obtaining it. Every move is calculated. This man split his soul multiple times because death itself got in the way of his long-term goals. I mean, sure, he's a little beyond the average Capricorn Moon. But we've gone completely off the rails at this point. The ambition is unmistakable. Voldemort just lurks around waiting for the perfect moment to make his return. He literally waited 10 business years just to make moves that would get him closer to his goal.

I mean, let me reiterate this is EXTREME malefic Capricorn energy. I suspect he may have a Rahu, Mars, Moon Capricorn stellium in the 8th house.

LOL.

But I digress.

Aquarius: Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is Aquarius, and I genuinely don't know who else I would even consider. Luna is living in an entirely different reality than the rest of Hogwarts. Yes, she's odd. Yes, she's different. But it's deeper than that. Luna is one of the few characters in the entire series who seems completely comfortable with things most people spend their lives trying to avoid.

Loss.

Death.

Loneliness.

Difference.

I mean, Luna lost her mother at a young age, yet she speaks about death with a level of acceptance that most adults in the series never achieve. While everyone else is terrified of loss, Luna seems to understand that loss is part of loving people in the first place. There is something incredibly detached about the way she moves through the world. Not cold. Not uncaring. Just detached. She doesn't seem particularly concerned with fitting in, being popular, or convincing other people that she's right.

And I think that's why Harry trusts her.

Everyone else spends so much time telling Harry what he should think. Luna simply sees him. She doesn't need him to be The Chosen One. She doesn't need him to be a hero. She doesn't need him to be anything other than Harry.+In a world full of people trying to pull Harry in different directions, Luna is one of the few people who simply accepts what is.

Pisces: Ronald Weasley

Now this one might surprise some people. Think about it. Ron spends the entire series struggling with one thing. Who is Ron Weasley? He grows up with a million siblings, all of whom have already done something noteworthy. Then he becomes best friends with Harry Potter. Then he falls in love with Hermione Granger. Everywhere he turns, somebody is bigger, smarter, richer, more famous, or more accomplished.

I think you can see this most clearly in the Mirror of Erised. Harry sees his parents. Ron sees himself. Not the Ron everyone else knows, but the Ron he dreams of being. Head Boy. Quidditch Captain. Successful. Accomplished. . I think that's what Ron wants more than anything. To be seen.

Maybe that's why Ron gets jealous. Not selfishly, but because he constantly feels like he's disappearing into the background. The thing about Pisces is that the boundaries aren't always clear. Pisces can struggle to figure out where they end, and other people begin. Ron spends so much time measuring himself against everyone around him that he sometimes loses sight of himself. Also for all his complaining, arguing, and occasional stupidity, Ron is driven by his heart more than anything else.
