Friends Astrological Archetypes

The Archetype Archive is an opinion-based exploration of astrological archetypes for educational, commentary, and entertainment purposes. All characters, images, and intellectual property belong to their respective owners.

I LOVE Friends. This is a show that I literally grew up watching, and I genuinely remember learning so many lessons from it. It's hilarious, but still packed with some really profound moments. This was back in the days when there were actually commercials, and I think Seinfeld would come on afterward. Putting this one together gave me all the nostalgic vibes and reminded me why these characters have remained so iconic for so many years. Let's get into it.

Aries: Janice

OH. MY. GOD.

You always know when she's coming. The laugh. The VOICE! This woman has a complete inability to enter a room quietly. And I've gotta tell you, it's pretty obvious that Janice doesn't seem particularly concerned about how people will react to her. She just shows up and lets everyone else figure it out.

This is a woman who hooks up with Ross, crashes Monica and Chandler's wedding, and dresses like a walking stop sign, all without a hint of shame. Most people would at least pause to wonder if they've crossed a line. Janice? She figures that's everyone else's problem. She's not just in on the joke, she'll usually be the only one laughing. There's something incredibly bold about her. The entire friend group finds her annoying. Chandler spends years trying to avoid her, but Janice keeps showing up anyway. Unapologetically. Loud as ever.

What makes me associate Janice with the Aries archetype isn't just her confidence. It's how comfortable she is being herself. Janice never seems particularly interested in changing herself to make other people more comfortable. Most people would shrink to fit into the room; Janice would rather be Janice. Deep down, she seems perfectly happy with who she is. As she should be.

Potential Placements: Aries Moon, Aries Ascendant, Mars conjunct the Moon, Mars conjunct the Ascendant, strong 1st house, prominent Mars.

Taurus: Rachel

I thought about whether Rachel should represent the Libra or Taurus archetype. In the end, I landed on Taurus, and here's why.

In the very first episode, we see Rachel's story begin with her learning to build her own security. She gives up one form of security (her parents and her marriage to Barry) because she doesn't want to be a shoe. She wants to be a purse... or a hat. But Rachel's story isn't really about having security. It's about creating it for herself. That desire to build something of her own is what pushes her to stand up to her family and start a completely new life. For an archetype that values stability and security as much as Taurus does, that's a pretty fitting character arc.

Rachel starts out as the girl who can’t make coffee and ends up running the show at Ralph Lauren. She could have stayed with Barry and lived out her days as Mrs. Orthodontist, but she’d rather fumble her way through waitressing and climb the fashion ladder one rung at a time. Rachel’s not just chasing a paycheck, she’s out to prove, mostly to herself, that she can build something real.

Potential Placements: Taurus Moon, Taurus Ascendant, Venus conjunct the Moon, Venus conjunct the Ascendant, strong 2nd house, prominent Venus.

Gemini: Chandler

Friends without Chandler would basically be a group of people making questionable life choices in silence. His quick wit and unsolicited sarcasm are responsible for some of the funniest moments in the entire show. Chandler literally has jokes locked and loaded before anyone else has even finished talking. He notices everything and somehow always knows exactly what to say to get a laugh.

But if you watch Chandler for more than five minutes, you start to see the pattern. The jokes are doing more than making people laugh. They're also protecting him. Anytime a conversation gets too serious, Chandler makes a joke. It becomes so predictable that we, as an audience, expect it.

That's why his relationship with Monica becomes such an important part of his story. For years, Chandler uses humor to keep people at arm's length, but Monica is one of the first people who consistently pushes past it. She forces him to communicate what he's actually feeling instead of hiding behind another sarcastic comment. As the series goes on, you watch Chandler slowly learn that not every uncomfortable moment needs a punchline.

What makes me associate Chandler with the Gemini archetype is his relationship with communication. Humor is his defense mechanism. Beneath all the sarcasm, Chandler is a character learning to communicate honestly rather than just cleverly.

Potential Placements: Gemini Moon, Gemini Ascendant, Mercury conjunct the Moon, Mercury conjunct the Ascendant, strong 3rd house, prominent Mercury.

Cancer: Ross

Ross is the perfect example of the Cancer archetype wearing its heart on its sleeve. He has no problem expressing how he feels, and unlike some other characters, he rarely hides his emotions behind humor or indifference. Ross always seems to be searching for a home. Not necessarily a physical home, but an emotional one. His sense of security seems deeply tied to the relationships he builds and maintains.

That's why we see him move from relationship to relationship throughout the series. Some of his biggest storylines revolve around building and protecting those bonds. The best example of this is Rachel. Ross becomes attached to Rachel when they're still kids, and that attachment follows him for years. Even when life takes them in different directions, he never fully lets it go.

But as I've explained before, the Cancer archetype isn't just about being emotional. It's about nurturing, belonging, and creating a sense of home. Ross can be sensitive, emotional, and occasionally dramatic, but he's also deeply devoted to the people he loves. Much of his story revolves around trying to build and protect the relationships that make him feel secure.

Potential Placements: Cancer Moon, Cancer Ascendant, Moon conjunct the Ascendant, Moon in the 4th house, strong 4th house, prominent Moon.

Leo: Joey

"How you doin'?" and I know we all said that with his inflection. I try not to assign archetypes based on superficial reasoning. I try to really get into the underlying patterns, but I felt like I kind of had to with this one because when it comes to Joey, what you see is what you get. Joey's charm and charisma seem to bring him attention effortlessly.

What makes Joey such a great fit for the Leo archetype is that his confidence doesn't seem to stem from his accomplishments. It just exists. Throughout the series, Joey faces rejection after rejection as an actor. We see him struggle financially and constantly find himself back at square one with his career. Yet somehow, none of it seems capable of convincing him that he won't eventually make it.

Joey believes in Joey with a level of dedication that is honestly admirable. You can also see that same spirit extended to the people he cares about. He supports Rachel through her pregnancy. He supports Monica and Chandler as they navigate living together. There are countless examples throughout the series of Joey showing up for the people he loves and wanting them to succeed. Just don't kiss his sisters or eat his food.

Potential Placements: Leo Moon, Leo Ascendant, Sun conjunct the Moon, Sun conjunct the Ascendant, strong 5th house, prominent Sun.

Virgo: Monica

Monica is textbook Virgo. And while we could definitely hit on all the obvious reasons, I think my main argument is that Monica is the group’s caretaker. Everyone usually hangs out at her apartment when they're not at the coffee shop. She never really asks, "Why me?" She just takes responsibility for it. In fact, she seems happier when she's the one in charge.

Even in her career, we see the same pattern. Monica literally makes a living feeding people. A huge part of her identity revolves around being useful to others. Of course, Monica being Monica, she does occasionally take things a little too far. Even Monica needs somewhere for all that pressure to go. That's why we see this woman with a secret, messy closet hidden inside an otherwise spotless apartment.

I think we see Monica struggle most with self-criticism. People who embody the Virgo archetype can be incredibly hard on themselves, and Monica is no exception. Some of that is likely reinforced by her relationship with her mother, who constantly compares her to Ross and rarely seems satisfied with what Monica accomplishes.

Potential Placements: Virgo Moon, Virgo Ascendant, Mercury conjunct Saturn, Mercury conjunct the Ascendant, strong 6th house, prominent Mercury.

Libra - Jill

I HAD to bring Jill into the mix here. I mean, no one else in the series is THIS Libra coded. I considered Rachel for this archetype, but so much of Rachel's story revolves around building stability and security for herself that I ultimately associated her with Taurus instead. But Jill? Jill is pure Libra chaos.

When Daddy cuts her off, she doesn't decide to make her own way. She doesn't start building a career. She doesn't even really consider the possibility that she might have to struggle for a little while. Instead, she immediately threatens to hire a lawyer and sue him for everything he's got. Honestly, the fact that her first instinct is legal action instead of getting a job is kind of hilarious.

Jill somehow manages to float through life on charm alone. She breezes into a room, flirts with Ross despite knowing he's Rachel's ex, creates problems, and somehow still manages to walk away smiling. Things come so easily to Jill that she never really develops the independence we see Rachel fighting so hard to build.

Now don't get me wrong. This isn't to say the Libra archetype is lazy, spoiled, or incapable of taking care of itself. This is Jill we're talking about. More than anything, I think Jill shows what this archetype can look like when it's out of balance. Instead of using her charm to build relationships, she uses it to avoid responsibility. Instead of creating harmony, she expects other people to clean up the mess for her. That's a Jill problem, not a Libra problem.

Potential Placements: Libra Moon, Libra Ascendant, Venus conjunct the Ascendant, Venus conjunct Jupiter, strong 7th house, prominent Venus.

Scorpio: Gunther

Now, now. Would y'all just give me a minute before you roll your eyes? Let me plead my case with this one because I think I'm going to get some disagreements. Which is fine. You can always tell me I'm wrong in the comments or write your own blog.

For some reason, people only seem to accept outright villains in the Scorpio spot. The Scorpio archetype is so beyond misunderstood. If you study Vedic astrology, you'll know every sign contains multiple Nakshatras, and personally, I could see Gunther falling somewhere in Anuradha. I digress. Gunther isn't some malicious jerk who keys cars and starts fights because he has a crush on Rachel. He's actually pretty kind and respectful throughout most of the series.

Where I see the Scorpio archetype is in the way Gunther attaches himself to Rachel. The man spends almost the entire series quietly carrying a torch for her. He watches her date other people. He watches her get back together with Ross. He watches her break up with Ross. He watches her leave. He watches her come back. Most people would have moved on somewhere around season two.

Gunther isn't loud about his feelings. He doesn't spend ten seasons trying to sabotage Rachel's relationships. Instead, he just sits there with the same emotional attachment year after year. If that's not fixed water sign behavior, I don't know what is.

Potential Placements: Scorpio Moon, Scorpio Ascendant, Mars in Scorpio, Rahu in Scorpio, Scorpio stellium, strong 8th house.

Sagittarius: Mike

Mike was actually one of the harder archetypes for me because, compared to the rest of the cast, he doesn't have a ton of obvious quirks to work with.

Mike is just so easygoing. Even his entry into the show is Sagittarius-coded. Joey forgets to find someone for his big double date with Phoebe, walks into Central Perk, yells "Mike!" and somehow they end up sitting at a table together. Mike even says he can't believe he's doing this because he just got out of a nine-year relationship. Nine years? The 9th house? Is it irony? I think not.

Also, HE was a lawyer. Come on. Sagittarius and the 9th house are all over that one. But what really sells me on Mike is that he gave up his law career to play the piano professionally. That's such a Sagittarius archetype thing to do. Most people spend years trying to get a stable career. Mike gets one and then decides he'd rather do something he actually enjoys.

He's also incredibly playful and encourages the people around him to be themselves. When Phoebe starts spiraling before meeting his parents, Mike reassures her that he wants them to meet the real Phoebe, not some polished version of her. Even when he disagrees with her, he somehow manages to keep things lighthearted. When Phoebe changes her name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock, Mike responds by changing his own name to Crap Bag. Because apparently that's how healthy communication works in the Friends universe.

Potential Placements: Sagittarius Moon, Sagittarius Ascendant, Jupiter conjunct the Sun, Jupiter in the 9th house, strong 9th house, prominent Jupiter.

Capricorn: Richard

Richard is incredibly mature, and it's not just an age thing. It seems embedded in who he is as a person. Richard always comes across as someone who knows himself. He knows what he wants, what he doesn't, and he isn't interested in playing games or pretending otherwise.

When he reunites with Monica at a party with some colleagues, everyone else seems perfectly content standing around making small talk, but Richard openly admits he'd rather be anywhere else, even though he's probably the most socially capable person in the room. He cracks the joke, gets the laugh, but it just doesn't seem to do much for him.

At the end of their relationship, it's clear they still love each other deeply, but they can't agree on having children. Richard could have selfishly dragged the situation out, but instead, he accepts the reality of the situation for what it is. He's mature enough to let Monica go while also being honest about his own feelings. As painful as it is, he understands that loving someone doesn't automatically solve the problem.

Then, when Monica is about to marry Chandler, Richard shows us that same quality again. He makes one last attempt to tell Monica how he feels, but once it's clear she's chosen Chandler, he steps aside.

That's what makes him such a strong example of the Capricorn archetype. Richard isn't guided by fantasy or impulse. Solid guy.

Potential Placements: Capricorn Moon, Capricorn Ascendant, Saturn conjunct the Moon, Saturn conjunct the Ascendant, strong 10th house, prominent Saturn.

Aquarius: Mr. Heckles

Mr. Heckles is one of those people who seems determined to be difficult. Every time he shows up, he's complaining about something. The neighbors are too loud. Somebody is bothering him. Somebody has his cat. (Nobody actually has his cat.) But that's not really the point. Heckles moves through life with the confidence of a man who has decided reality is optional.

Every time he appears, it's like the rules of the show temporarily stop applying., and nobody ever really argues with him for very long. It's because trying to understand Mr. Heckles feels like trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing. Eventually, people just accept that whatever is happening in his apartment is between him and God.

Even when he's clearly lonely, he expresses it in the weirdest way possible. Most people would introduce themselves and try to make friends. Heckles invents problems. It's like he wants a connection but refuses to take the normal route to get there.

That's what makes him such a good example of the Aquarius archetype. Beneath all the eccentric behavior, there seems to be a genuine desire for friendship, connection, and belonging. The problem is that Heckles doesn't know how to express those needs in a conventional way. Instead of saying, "I'm lonely," he turns it into a complaint, an argument, or some bizarre misunderstanding. For all his odd behavior, there's something strangely human about him.

Potential Placements: Aquarius Moon, Aquarius Ascendant, Ketu in the 11th house, Saturn conjunct Uranus, Aquarius stellium, prominent Uranus.

Pisces: Phoebe

On paper, Phoebe should probably be the most cynical person in the group. Her mother dies when she's young. Her father abandons the family. She spends part of her childhood homeless. If anyone had a reason to become bitter, it was Phoebe. Instead, she somehow comes out the other side believing in soulmates, psychic connections, reincarnation, and cats that may or may not contain the spirits of dead relatives.

The Pisces archetype is deeply connected to themes of loss, grief, isolation, and transcendence. Phoebe's life is filled with all of those experiences. The difference is that instead of becoming hardened by them, she filters them through imagination, spirituality, humor, and wonder.

And I think that's what people misunderstand about the Pisces archetype. People hear "fantasy" and assume it's about escaping reality. But what if it's the opposite? What if it's about surviving reality? Phoebe doesn't believe strange things because she's disconnected from suffering. She believes strange things because she's intimately familiar with it. If you've experienced enough loss, the idea that your mother might come back as a cat starts making a lot more sense emotionally than it does logically. She keeps finding reasons to love a world that hasn't always been kind to her.

Potential Placements: Pisces Moon, Pisces Ascendant, Ketu in the 12th house, Moon in the 12th house, strong 12th house, Pisces stellium.
