Their stories often embody specific astrological archetypes in a direct, easy-to-understand way, making them the perfect place to begin this series. Astrology is ultimately a language of patterns. The same themes appear repeatedly throughout mythology, literature, film, television, and real life. Some characters embody these patterns so clearly that they almost feel like living representations of an archetype. Disney villains are especially useful because their motivations, desires, fears, and flaws are often exaggerated, making the underlying symbolism easier to recognize.

These characters tend to represent the shadow expression of an archetype. Around here, we are about truth, and the truth is that everyone has varying degrees of shadow that emerge at different points in life. The goal is not to label people as heroes or villains, but to understand the patterns that drive behavior when they become distorted, unchecked, or taken to an extreme.

Let's explore the Disney Villains through the lens of astrological archetypes.

Aries: Hades

Hades is a hothead. No, literally, his head is on fire.

For the shadow side of the Aries archetype, it doesn't get much more obvious than that. Hades is impatient, reactive, competitive, and absolutely incapable of letting things go when they don't go his way. Every setback becomes personal. His emotions move fast, and his temper moves even faster.

The Mars energy comes through strongly in his communication style as well. No fluff, no sugar coating, and absolutely no beating around the bush. Hades says exactly what he thinks and expects everyone else to keep up.

What makes him such a great expression of the Aries shadow isn't that he's weak, passive, or incapable. In fact, he's incredibly competent. His downfall is that his own anger, impulsiveness, and inability to control his reactions constantly sabotage him. Hades usually creates more problems with his temper than his enemies ever could.

Taurus: Tamatoa

Okay, let me just be real for a second. Taurus was the hardest archetype for me to match to a villain because, frankly, the shadow side of Venus-ruled Taurus is usually less dramatic than some of the other signs. It is more often a kind of mindless self-indulgence. Sure, Tamatoa hits the greed and selfishness of loving all things shiny, but I had to think a little deeper than that.

I think what adds an even more emotionally complex layer to Taurus is attachment. Taurus does not like to let go. Whether it is possessions, comfort, pleasure, status, routines, or even old versions of itself, this archetype can become deeply attached to what feels good and familiar.

Tamatoa literally surrounds himself with treasures and builds his entire identity around what he owns. Strip away the comedy, and there is actually a pretty strong Taurus shadow there. The fear that, without all the shiny things, nothing remains underneath. Everything he values comes from what he has accumulated rather than who he is.

And can I just say, the fact that he casually talks about eating his own grandma is both hilarious and, somehow, perfectly on-brand. If there is food involved, all bets are off.

Gemini: Yzma

I picked Yzma to represent the shadow side of the Gemini archetype.

She is talkative, intelligent, witty, and quick-thinking, but also shows how those gifts can be used to manipulate others. While pursuing Kuzco's throne, she presents herself as a loyal advisor and friend while secretly plotting behind the scenes. This is where the Mercury energy comes through. Gemini is associated with communication, strategy, ideas, and adaptability. Yzma is constantly thinking, planning, and finding a new way forward when things do not go as planned. Her mind is her greatest weapon.

The shadow side appears when intelligence turns into schemes and communication becomes deception. Yzma demonstrates the darker expression of using words, knowledge, and perception not to connect with others, but to control the situation around her. No matter how many setbacks she encounters, she immediately pivots to a new plan. For better or worse, Yzma is always thinking three steps ahead.

Cancer: Lady Tremaine

I know that sounds strange at first. Most people hear Cancer and immediately think nurturing. Lady Tremaine shows what happens when those instincts become resentful and emotionally controlling.

Everything she does revolves around family loyalty. Her daughters come first, whether they deserve what she tries to give them or not. She views Cinderella as a threat to their security and status, which fuels her cruelty. In Lady Tremaine's mind, Cinderella's success comes at her own family's expense.

What stands out is how passive her villainy feels. She doesn't charge into battle or seek power for its own sake. She operates through guilt, obligation, emotional pressure, and manipulation. She controls the atmosphere of the home and uses that control to keep Cinderella in her place.

That's what makes her such an interesting expression of the Cancer shadow. Cancer is deeply connected to family, protection, belonging, and emotional security. When those instincts become distorted, protection can turn into possessiveness, loyalty can become favoritism, and nurturing can become control. Lady Tremaine isn't motivated by conquest or ambition. She's motivated by a desire to protect what she considers hers, regardless of who gets hurt in the process.

Leo: Gaston

This one is pretty clear. Gaston is pure Leo shadow to me.

He is showy, boastful, attention-hungry, and consumed by his own ego. He genuinely believes that because everyone else wants him, Belle should, too. In his mind, rejection is insulting. He cannot handle it. Instead of accepting that Belle is not interested, he turns her rejection into a personal attack. He plots an entire revenge scheme against Belle while continuing to present himself as the hero.

In his mind, he is still the good guy. He still deserves admiration and the happy ending. Gaston cannot handle not being desired, so he turns humiliation into revenge. He does not just want Belle. He wants validation as the man Belle chose. Once he loses that, his obsession becomes restoring his pride.

That's what makes Gaston such a strong expression of the Leo shadow. Leo wants to be seen, appreciated, and celebrated. When those desires become distorted, confidence can turn into arrogance and admiration can become entitlement. Gaston isn't motivated by love nearly as much as he's motivated by the need to preserve the image he has of himself. The moment that image is threatened, his charm disappears, and his wounded pride takes over.

Virgo: The Evil Queen

Virgo is often associated with high standards. The shadow side is that those standards can become impossible to satisfy. Nobody embodies this better than the Evil Queen.

Her downfall begins with a single question she doesn't like the answer to. She needs constant confirmation that she is the fairest in the land. When she learns that someone else has surpassed her, she becomes obsessed. What stands out is how calculated she is. Her plans are deliberate and carefully executed. She does not act out of raw emotion or impulse. Snow White was never really the problem. The real problem was the Queen's inability to accept imperfection.

That's what makes her such a compelling expression of the Virgo shadow. Virgo has an incredible ability to identify flaws and refine what can be improved. When that energy becomes distorted, the focus shifts from improvement to obsession. Instead of appreciating what she already possesses, the Evil Queen becomes fixated on the one thing she lacks.

Her entire world collapses because someone else is prettier. Not more powerful. Not more intelligent. Just prettier. The Queen cannot tolerate falling short of her own impossible standard, and that obsession ultimately destroys her.

Libra: Cruella de Vil

Cruella was another easy one. She's stylish, iconic, charming, and obsessed with aesthetics. Sure, her choices get her into a tizzy, but at the end of the day, she's just a girl who wants to make a fashion statement.

Obviously, the way she plans to achieve that goal is morally questionable, but her motivations are surprisingly simple. She wants beauty. She wants luxury. She wants to create something unforgettable. Her charm has her henchmen completely at her beck and call. Despite her outrageous demands, people still follow her. There is something undeniably magnetic about her.

That's what makes Cruella such an interesting expression of the Libra shadow. Libra is deeply connected to beauty, aesthetics, image, and social influence. At its best, it creates elegance, charm, and artistic vision. At its worst, appearance can become more important than people.

The desire to create something beautiful becomes more important than the people or puppies it affects. Cruella isn't motivated by survival, revenge, or power. She's motivated by the pursuit of perfection and the image she wants to create. Everything else is simply collateral damage.

Scorpio: Dr. Facilier

A lot of Disney villains want power, but Dr. Facilier understands it.

He knows where people's weaknesses lie. He gives them what they think they want and lets them walk into the trap themselves. What makes him such a strong expression of the Scorpio archetype is his relationship with hidden forces. He operates in the shadows, works through secrets, and constantly deals in debts, exchanges, and consequences. Everything has a price.

His connection to the occult world reinforces this archetype. He willingly works with powers most people fear, treating the unseen as a tool to gain influence and control. He is also patient. He does not need to be the loudest person in the room because he knows he can influence events from behind the curtain. He understands the darker side of human nature and uses that knowledge for his own gain.

Scorpio understands that power rarely operates on the surface. It lives in secrets, leverage, debts, vulnerabilities, and the things people would rather keep hidden. Facilier rarely forces anyone to do anything. He simply understands exactly what they want and allows them to become participants in their own downfall.

Sagittarius: Captain Hook

I think Hook shows us the shadow side of the Sagittarius archetype.

He is restless, larger-than-life, and constantly chasing something just out of reach. What stands out is that Hook cannot let go of the hunt. His entire life revolves around pursuing Peter Pan. He could be sailing the seas, exploring new horizons, and living freely, but instead he becomes consumed by a personal crusade.

The irony is that the archetype most associated with freedom becomes trapped by obsession. Hook has endless opportunities for adventure, yet he spends his life chasing the same enemy over and over again.

There is something deeply Sagittarian about his theatrical nature. Hook is dramatic, expressive, and completely convinced that his perspective is correct. He sees himself as the wronged party and turns that belief into a lifelong mission.

That's what makes him such an interesting expression of the Sagittarius shadow. Sagittarius is driven by the search for meaning, truth, and purpose. When that energy becomes distorted, conviction can turn into self-righteousness and purpose can become fixation. Hook isn't really searching for freedom anymore. He's searching for vindication. The hunt becomes his identity, and the search for meaning becomes the inability to move on.

Capricorn: Jafar

More than anything, Jafar wants to climb.

He is not satisfied with influence, proximity to power, or being the Sultan's advisor. He wants to be at the top. Every decision he makes is aimed at gaining more authority, more control, and a higher position than the one he currently holds. That ambition is what makes him such a strong expression of the Capricorn archetype.

Unlike villains driven by emotion or revenge, Jafar feels calculated, with his eyes fixed firmly on power. He is always looking toward the next level, the next title, and the next opportunity to elevate himself.

That's what makes him such an interesting expression of the Capricorn shadow. Capricorn is associated with achievement, status, responsibility, and the desire to build something lasting. When that energy becomes distorted, accomplishment is never enough because there is always another rung to climb.

Even when Jafar gains power, he immediately wants more. Advisor is not enough. Ruler is not enough. Sorcerer is not enough. Nothing is ever enough because the goal is no longer achievement. The goal is absolute control. His ambition becomes so consuming that he can never enjoy what he has already attained.

Aquarius: Maleficent

What immediately stands out about Maleficent is that she doesn't seem interested in being part of the kingdom. She lives separately, does her own thing, and follows her own rules. There is a strong outsider quality to her that feels very Aquarian.

And honestly, what could be more Aquarius than showing up to a party you weren't invited to and cursing a baby? It is such an unconventional response. Most villains would start a fight or demand revenge right away. Maleficent creates a curse that unfolds over years and changes the course of everyone's lives.

She carries herself with emotional distance. She often feels removed from what is happening around her, almost as though she is observing everything from the outside rather than participating in it. Even when she becomes involved, she does so on her own terms.

Aquarius is associated with independence, individuality, and the desire to stand apart from the crowd. When that energy becomes distorted, detachment can become isolation and uniqueness can become superiority. The desire to stand apart becomes the belief that normal rules do not apply to you.

Maleficent doesn't seem concerned with fitting in, being understood, or gaining approval. She exists outside the system and acts accordingly. The kingdom may have its rules, customs, and expectations, but Maleficent has already decided they do not apply to her.

Pisces: Ursula

Now, I know. Y'all are going to come for me and say, "Del, why isn't Ursula Scorpio?" Hear me out. She's Pisces.

When I think of Ursula, I don't think about power, revenge, or control first. I think about temptation, fantasy, dreams, and escape. Ursula makes a living selling people the life they wish they had. She paints a picture of a different reality and lets Ariel convince herself. That's what feels so Piscean to me. Ursula understands longing, desire, and the part of people that wants something so badly they ignore every warning sign.

She is also incredibly fluid. She adapts to whoever she's talking to, tells people exactly what they want to hear, and slips into different roles when it benefits her. There is something shapeshifting about her energy that feels much more Pisces than Scorpio to me.

That's what makes Ursula such an interesting expression of the Pisces shadow. Pisces is associated with imagination, dreams, fantasy, spirituality, and the ability to transcend reality. When that energy becomes distorted, fantasy can become deception and dreams can become escapism. The real danger with Ursula isn't that she overpowers people. It's that she gets them to willingly hand over exactly what she wants. She doesn't force anyone into the illusion. She simply creates it and lets them step inside.
