The Three Gunas

In Vedic astrology, each planet, zodiac sign, and Nakshatra carries a specific Guna. A Guna is a fundamental quality. It is the condition under which energy operates. Everything moves through these qualities. The three Gunas are Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Understanding them lets you recognize the overall energy state within a planet, sign, or Nakshatra. To read a chart clearly, you need to know which quality you are observing. You should be able to look at a planet and immediately recognize its Guna. The Gunas keep us connected to nature. They are not good or bad. They are different energy conditions, and all three are necessary for life. Understanding them is essential to understanding consciousness because these qualities reflect how it expresses itself.

Sattwa Guna is pure. It is connected to balance and wisdom. It is associated with goodness. (but that does not make it God’s favorite, or better than the other two). It shows spirituality, intelligence and clairity. Sattva is seen most clearly in Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, in signs like Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer, and Leo, and in the last 9 Nakshatras, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta. Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati.

Rajas Guna is about creativity, creation, and achieving goals. It is associated with Brahma, who is the creator of the physical universe. Rajas shows ambition, desire, energy, and movement. In this life, enjoyment should not be seen as evil or a distraction. It allows you to be fully engaged with the experience of life. It drives action and keeps things moving forward. Rajas is associated with Mercury and Venus, signs like Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Libra, and the 1st nine Nakshatras Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha.

Tamas is associated with Lord Shiva, the God of destruction, death, and endings. Without this Guna of transformation, the other two are not complete. Tamas can be lazy, lethargic, dark, and destructive. It slows things down and brings things to an end when their time is over. It can create resistance, but it is also what allows for rest, release, and transformation. Without Tamas, nothing would ever stop, and nothing would be able to change. Tamas is associated with Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, signs like Virgo, Scorpio, Capticorn and Aquarius, , and 2nd 9 Nakshatras Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha.

As an analogy, something my favorite astrologer Kapiel Raaj says explains this well. A tree is Sattva because it simply is what it is. It exists in its natural state. A tree can give Rajas through the enjoyment of its shade. But a tree can also be Tamas, because it can fall and kill you.
