Friends Moon Sign Archetype

One of my favorite things to do when studying astrology is to find patterns and sort information. I love understanding what influences people, and these patterns help me communicate, connect, and observe the people in my life more clearly. I created the Archetype Archive as a place to organize those observations in a more lighthearted and entertaining way. Everything here is purely opinion-based and reflects the archetypes I personally associate with each zodiac placement based on my own studies, observations, and experiences.

All images, characters, films, books, television series, and other media referenced belong to their respective creators and copyright holders. Archetype Archive is intended for commentary, discussion, education, and entertainment purposes only.

I LOVE Friends. This is a show that I literally grew up watching, and I genuinely remember learning so many lessons from it. It's hilarious, but still packed with some really profound moments. This was back in the days when there were actually commercials, and I think Seinfeld would come on afterward. I will say, this one was a bit more difficult since there are only six main characters in the Friends universe, but I think I ended up with a pretty solid list in the end. Putting this one together really gave me all the nostalgic vibes. Let's get into it.

Aries: Janice

Bold • Assertive • Unapologetic

OH. MY. GOD.

You always know when she's coming. The laugh. The VOICE! This woman has a complete inability to enter a room quietly. And I've gotta tell you, it's pretty obvious that Janice doesn't seem particularly concerned about how people will react to her. She just shows up and lets everyone else figure it out.

I mean, this woman sleeps with Ross, invites herself to Monica and Chandler's wedding, wears bright red from head to toe, and somehow never seems embarrassed by any of it. Most people would spend at least a little time wondering whether they've gone too far. Janice is just like, "Meh, that's a them problem." She's always in on the joke.

Like any good Aries Moon, there's something incredibly bold about her. The entire friend group finds her annoying. Chandler spends years trying to avoid her, but Janice keeps showing up anyway. Unapologetically. Loud as ever.

What makes me think Aries Moon isn't just her straight up confidence. It's how comfortable she is being herself. Janice never seems particularly interested in changing herself to make other people more comfortable. Most people would shrink to fit into the room; Janice would rather be Janice. Deep down, she seems perfectly happy with who she is. As she should be. Even when she's rejected, excluded, or made fun of, she doesn't spend much time shrinking herself. She just keeps moving forward. Low-key, I respect it.

Taurus: Rachel

Beauty • Security • Loyalty

I thought about whether Rachel should be a Libra or a Taurus Moon. I knew for certain she was going to be a Venus-ruled sign because she has very Venusian energy constantly manifesting around her, but I ultimately landed on Taurus Moon, and here's why.

In the very first episode, we see Rachel's entire story begin with her learning how to build security for herself. She gives up one form of security (her parents and her marriage to Barry) because she doesn't want to be a shoe. She wants to be a purse... or a hat. But Rachel's story isn't really about having security. It's about creating it for herself. That desire to build something of her own is what pushes her to stand up to her family and start a completely new life. For a sign that values stability and security as much as Taurus does, that's a pretty fitting character arc.

Throughout the series, we watch her go from someone who depends on others to someone who can stand on her own two feet. She starts out as a runaway bride who can't even make coffee and ends up building a successful career in fashion. She starts the series with a silver spoon in her mouth, but Rachel ends up working surprisingly hard for the life she wants.

Rachel could have just married Barry. She could have had the big house, the country club membership, and whatever rich people in Long Island do all day. Instead, she chooses the harder path because she wants to prove she can create that life for herself. Plus, let's be honest, Barry kind of sucks.

Gemini: Chandler

Witty • Communicative • Perceptive

Friends without Chandler would basically be a group of people making questionable life choices in silence.  His quick wit and unsolicited sarcasm are responsible for some of the funniest moments in the entire show. Chandler literally has jokes locked and loaded before anyone else has even finished talking. Whether Ross is making a terrible decision, Joey is saying something ridiculous, or Monica is obsessing over every little detail, Chandler is usually the first person to point it out. He notices everything and somehow always knows exactly what to say to get a laugh.

But if you watch Chandler for more than five minutes, you start to see the pattern. The jokes are doing more than making people laugh. They're also protecting him. Anytime a conversation gets too serious, Chandler makes a joke. Anytime he's uncomfortable, Chandler makes a joke. Anytime he's expected to be emotionally vulnerable, Chandler makes a joke. It becomes so predictable that we, as an audience, expect it.

That's why his relationship with Monica becomes such an important part of his story. For years, Chandler uses humor to keep people at arm's length, but Monica is one of the first people who consistently pushes past it. She forces him to communicate what he's actually feeling instead of hiding behind another sarcastic comment. As the series goes on, you watch Chandler slowly learn that not every uncomfortable moment needs a punchline. The jokes never go away, but by the end of the series they're no longer the only thing people get from him.

Cancer: Ross

Sensitive • Protective • Sentimental

Ross is the perfect example of a Cancer Moon wearing their heart on their sleeve. He has no problem expressing how he feels, and unlike some other characters, he rarely hides his emotions behind humor or indifference. When Ross is happy, everyone knows. When Ross is hurt, everyone knows. When Ross is in love, everyone definitely knows. Ross always seems to be searching for a home. Not necessarily a physical home, but an emotional one. In fact, I could easily see Ross as a 7th house Cancer Moon because his idea of home seems completely tied to partnership.

That's why we see him move from relationship to relationship throughout the series. Some of his biggest storylines revolve around building and protecting those bonds. The best example of this is Rachel. Ross becomes attached to Rachel when they're still kids, and that attachment follows him for years. Even when life takes them in different directions, he never fully lets it go. Whether they're together, broken up, or arguing about whether they were on a break for the five hundredth time, Rachel remains at the center of one of Ross's deepest emotional attachments.

But as I've explained before, Cancer Moons are not just crybabies. They're caretakers. Ross can be sensitive, emotional, and occasionally dramatic, but he's also deeply devoted to the people he loves. Ross spends much of his story trying to build and protect the relationships that make him feel at home.

Leo: Joey

Confident • Loyal • Charismatic

"How you doin'?" and I know we all said that with his inflection. I try not to assign based on superficial reasoning. I try to really get deep into the emotional patterns, but I felt like I kind of had to with this one because when it comes to Joey, what you see is what you get. Joey's charm and charisma seem to bring him attention effortlessly. Joey walks through life with a level of confidence that sometimes honestly makes no sense. But somehow it just works for him.

What I think makes Joey such a great Leo Moon, though, is that his confidence doesn't seem to come from what he's accomplished. It just seems effortless. Throughout the series, Joey faces rejection after rejection as an actor. We see him struggle financially and constantly find himself back at square one with his career. Yet somehow, none of it seems capable of convincing him that he won't eventually make it.

Joey believes in Joey with a level of dedication that is admirable. You can also see that same spirit extended to the people he cares about. He supports Rachel through her pregnancy. He supports Monica and Chandler as they navigate living together. There are countless examples throughout the series of Joey showing up for the people he loves and wanting them to succeed. Just don't kiss his sisters or eat his food. While the rest of the group is busy overthinking everything, Joey is usually just enjoying himself.

Honestly, that's probably why people love him so much. Joey reminds us that confidence is attractive, but confidence mixed with warmth is unforgettable.

Virgo: Monica

Responsible • Devoted • Perfectionistic

Monica is textbook Virgo. And while we could definitely hit on all the obvious reasons, I think my main argument is that Monica is the group’s caretaker. Everyone usually hangs out at her apartment when they're not at the coffee shop. She's the one cooking for everyone, cleaning up after everyone, and yelling at them not to put their cup down without a coaster. When an event needs to be hosted or planned, it's Monica who does the legwork, yet we rarely see her resent this role. She never really asks, "Why me?" She just takes responsibility for it. In fact, she seems happier when she's the one in charge.

Even in her career, we see the same pattern. Monica literally makes a living feeding people. Whether she's taking care of her friends, hosting Thanksgiving, planning a wedding, or working as a chef, a huge part of her identity revolves around being useful to others. Of course, Monica being Monica, she does occasionally take things a little too far. Even Monica needs somewhere for all that pressure to go. That’s why we see this is the woman with a secret, messy closet hidden inside an otherwise spotless apartment. She can also turn a friendly game into an Olympic event. This is how we see Monica let her hair down.

Emotionally, I think we see her struggle most with self-criticism. Virgo Moons can be incredibly hard on themselves, and Monica is no exception. Some of that is likely reinforced by her relationship with her mother, who constantly compares her to Ross and rarely seems satisfied with what Monica accomplishes. Considering the Moon also represents the mother, I always thought that was an interesting part of Monica's story.

Libra - Jill

Charming • Social • Indecisive

I HAD to bring Jill into the mix here. I mean no one else in the series is THIS Libra coded. Like I said, sure, I tinkered around with putting Rachel here, but building stability is such a huge part of her story, which is why I chose Taurus. But JILL. Now that's Libra Moon

When Daddy cuts her off, she doesn't decide to make her own way. She doesn't start building a career. She doesn't even really consider the possibility that she might have to struggle for a little while. Instead, she immediately threatens to hire a lawyer and sue him for everything he's got. Honestly, the fact that her first instinct is legal action instead of getting a job is kind of hilarious.

Jill somehow manages to float through life on charm alone. She breezes into a room, flirts with Ross despite knowing he's Rachel's ex, creates problems, and somehow still manages to walk away smiling. That's probably her greatest strength and greatest weakness. Things come so easily to Jill that she never really develops the independence we see Rachel fighting so hard to build.

Now don't get me wrong. This isn't to say Libra Moons are lazy, spoiled, or incapable of taking care of themselves. This is Jill we're talking about. More than anything, I think Jill shows what a Libra Moon can look like when they're out of balance. Instead of using her charm to build relationships, she uses it to avoid responsibility. Instead of creating harmony, she expects other people to clean up the mess for her. That's a Jill problem, not a Libra problem.

Scorpio: Gunther

Fixated • Persistent • Envious

Now, now. Would y'all just give me a minute before you roll your eyes? Let me plead my case with this one because I think I'm going to get some disagreements. Which is fine. You can always tell me I'm wrong in the comments or write your own blog. Signed, A Scorpio Moon.

I'M KIDDING. But I do anticipate this one raising some eyebrows. For some reason, y'all only seem to accept evil villains in the Scorpio Moon spot. Scorpio Moons are so beyond misunderstood, and I am definitely not just saying that because I am one. If you study Vedic astrology, you'll know every sign contains multiple Nakshatras, and personally, I could see Gunther falling somewhere in Anuradha. I digress. Gunther isn't some malicious jerk who keys cars and starts fights because he has a crush on Rachel. He's actually pretty kind and respectful throughout most of the series. He's just slightly sassy to Ross. And only Ross.

Where I see the Scorpio Moon is in the way Gunther attaches himself to Rachel. The man spends almost the entire series quietly carrying a torch for her. He watches her date other people. He watches her get back together with Ross. He watches her break up with Ross. He watches her leave. He watches her come back. Most people would have moved on somewhere around season two. Gunther never really does. And that's the thing. Gunther isn't loud about his feelings. He isn't dramatic about them. He doesn't spend ten seasons trying to sabotage Rachel's relationships. Instead, he just sits there with the same emotional attachment year after year. If that's not fixed water sign behavior, I don't know what is.

Sagittarius: Mike

Optimistic • Easygoing • Independent

Mike was actually one of the harder placements for me because, compared to the rest of the cast, he doesn't have a ton of obvious quirks to work with.

Mike is just so easygoing. Even his entry into the show is Sagittarius-coded. Joey forgets to find someone for his big double date with Phoebe, walks into Central Perk, yells "Mike!" and somehow they end up sitting at a table together. Mike even says he can't believe he's doing this because he just got out of a nine-year relationship. Nine years? The 9th house? Is it irony? I think not.

Also, HE was a lawyer. Come on. Sagittarius and the 9th house are all over that one. But what really sells me on Mike is that he gave up his law career to play the piano professionally. That's such a Sagittarius Moon move. Most people spend years trying to get a stable career. Mike gets one and then decides he'd rather do something he actually enjoys.

He's also incredibly playful and encourages the people around him to be themselves. When Phoebe starts spiraling before meeting his parents, Mike reassures her that he wants them to meet the real Phoebe, not some polished version of her. Even when he disagrees with her, he somehow manages to keep things lighthearted. When Phoebe changes her name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock, Mike responds by changing his own name to Crap Bag. Because apparently that's how healthy communication works in the Friends universe.

Capricorn: Richard

Mature • Established • Reliable

Richard is incredibly mature, and it's not just an age thing. It seems embedded in who he is as a person. Richard always comes across as someone who knows himself. He knows what he wants, what he doesn't, and he isn't interested in playing games or pretending otherwise.

When he reunites with Monica at a party with some colleagues, everyone else seems perfectly content standing around making small talk, but Richard openly admits he'd rather be anywhere else. The funny thing is he's probably the most socially capable person in the room. He cracks the joke, gets the laugh, but it just doesn't seem to do much for him.

At the end of his relationship with Monica its clear they still love each other deeply, but they can't agree on having children. Richard could have selfishly dragged the situation out, but instead, he accepts the reality of the situation for what it is. He's mature enough to let Monica go while also being honest about his own feelings. As painful as it is, he understands that loving someone doesn't automatically solve the problem.

Then, when Monica is about to marry Chandler, Richard shows us that same quality again. He makes one last attempt to tell Monica how he feels, but once it's clear she's chosen Chandler, he steps aside. More than anything else, Richard consistently chooses reality over wishful thinking. Even when it hurts.

Solid guy.

Aquarius: Mr. Heckles

Eccentric • Detached • Unpredictable

Mr. Heckles is one of those people who seems determined to be difficult. Every time he shows up, he's complaining about something. The neighbors are too loud. Somebody is bothering him. Somebody has his cat. (Nobody actually has his cat) But that's not really the point. Heckles moves through life with the confidence of a man who has decided reality is optional. And no, before anyone says it, I didn't just hand Aquarius Moon the weird guy.

The reason Heckles works is that his entire character feels disconnected from the reality everyone else is participating in. Every time he appears, it's like the rules of the show temporarily stop applying. The funny thing is that nobody ever really argues with him for very long. It's because trying to understand Mr. Heckles feels like trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing. Eventually, people just accept that whatever is happening in his apartment is between him and God.

Even when he's clearly lonely, he expresses it in the weirdest way possible. Most people would introduce themselves and try to make friends. Heckles invents problems, starts arguments, and claims ownership of random objects. It's like he wants connection but refuses to take the normal route to get there? Aquarius Moons can have a strange relationship with their emotions. They often want the same things everyone else wants, friendship, connection, belonging, but they don't always know how to express those needs directly. Instead of saying, "I'm lonely," they might turn it into a joke, an observation, a debate, or, in Heckles' case, a completely fabricated complaint about noise.

Pisces: Phoebe

Imaginative • Spiritual • Compassionate

On paper, Phoebe should probably be the most cynical person in the group. Her mother dies when she's young. Her father abandons the family. She spends part of her childhood homeless. If anyone had a reason to become bitter, it was Phoebe. Instead, she somehow comes out the other side believing in soulmates, psychic connections, reincarnation, and cats that may or may not contain the spirits of dead relatives.

Pisces is the natural ruler of the 12th house, and the 12th house is deeply connected to loss, grief, isolation, and suffering. Phoebe's life is filled with all of those themes. The difference is that instead of becoming hardened by them, she filters them through imagination, spirituality, humor, and wonder.

And I think that's what people misunderstand about Pisces energy. People hear "fantasy" and assume it's about escaping reality. But what if it's the opposite? What if it's about surviving reality? Phoebe doesn't believe strange things because she's disconnected from suffering. She believes strange things because she's intimately familiar with it. If you've experienced enough loss, the idea that your mother might come back as a cat starts making a lot more sense emotionally than it does logically. She keeps finding reasons to love a world that hasn't always been kind to her.
