Chandra in Jyotish
We started the year with the king of the sky, Surya, the Sun. Now it’s time to talk about the Moon, or Chandra in Vedic astrology. Chandra takes us inward because he rules the mind and shows what’s happening under the surface. The moon shows what is past the ego and what we present to the world. The Moon is one of the most important placements in Vedic astrology. You can even read an entire chart starting from the Moon alone, and daily events are looked at through the moons transits.
Before getting into symbolism, let’s talk about the Moon physically. The Moon formed very early in Earth’s history, about 4.5 billion years ago. This happened after a massive impact between Earth and a Mars sized body. The debris from that collision slowly came together and became the Moon we see today. It’s about 2,159 miles across and takes roughly 27 to 28 days to move through a Zodiac sign.
The Moon is brightest when it sits directly across from the Sun, which is what we call a full Moon. It waxes and wanes, and that cycle alone can tell you a lot about how someone experiences their Moon placement. Like the Sun, the Moon isn’t a planet, but it is a graha. Scientifically, the Sun is a star and the Moon is a satellite. The moon can also experience eclipses from the Earth’s shadow.
Chandra the Vedic Deity of the Moon

Chandra has a lot of stories in Vedic mythology, but one of the most well known is his connection to Rohini, one of the nakshatras. Chandra married the 27 daughters of Daksha, who represent the 27 nakshatras. He was supposed to treat them all equally, but he favored Rohini. The other sisters noticed and went to Daksha about it. Daksha wasn’t having that, so he cursed the Moon to fade away. Chandra went to Shiva for help. The curse couldn’t be removed, but it could be. . . modified? Instead of disappearing completely, the Moon would fade and then return again. That’s where the waxing and waning of the Moon comes from.
There’s another story where Chandra gets involved with Tara, who was married to Brihaspati, Jupiter. From that relationship, Tara became pregnant withNow we can explore what the Moon represents in a chart.

Understanding grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It is also important to say that there is not much that can be taught with just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is so layered that the details must come together to form a clear picture. Please understand that this is far less than the tip of the iceberg, but it is important to understand in order to build a strong foundation.
From the moons placement we can see how the mind processes life. What we think about and what runs beneath the surface. The Moon reflects the subconscious, while the Sun shows the ego and identity we present to the world. These are usually two different worlds. Together, they help explain the difference between how we experience life internally and how we move through it externally. The Moon also reveals desire, especially the kind tied to comfort and emotional safety. This is why the Moon is so connected to mood and routine. It shows how we respond to what life brings us before logic or intention has time to step in.
Unlike the Sun, the Moon is not about force or direction. It is about regulation. The mind can react automatically, but it can also be trained. Practices like mindfulness and meditation strengthen the Moon. In Vedic philosophy, learning to quiet the mind is essential. To understand God, one must first learn how to still the mind, and understand themselves.
A well placed Moon brings a sense of emotional steadiness. There is an inner calm that makes it easier to function without being thrown off by every shift or feeling. It allows a person to be more adaptable. It can help one to care deeply without losing themselves, and to pause before responding. This kind of Moon helps someone feel at home within their own inner world, even when external circumstances change. A challenged Moon can show up very differently. Emotions feel loud or overwhelming, and the mind can get stuck looping through worry or old patterns. There can be a strong attachment to comfort or familiarity which can make change feel threatening. When the Moon struggles, it often points to a deeper issue around safety, where the person does not fully trust their inner foundation and looks outside themselves for reassurance.
Working with Chandra is about learning how to take care of your inner world. When the mind is understood and supported, life becomes easier to navigate. The Moon shows how our inner tides move and how they shape real experiences. Learning the Moon is learning how to move with your own inner rhythms instead of fighting them.
