The Sun in Vedic Astrology

There’s no better way to step into the New Year and all the magical blogs and mystical lessons ahead than by starting with the king of the sky himself. The Sun.

Just like in our solar system, the Sun is very important in Vedic astrology. The deity of the Sun is known as Surya. He represents ego, vitality, willpower, confidence, expression, authority and self identity. And while all those are positive traits, the Sun is considered a mild malefic in Vedic Astrology. Why? Think of it like this, the Sun feels good on your skin, but if you stay in it for too long, you get burned. It also gives us light to see, but you can’t stare directly at it without consequences. There can always be too much of a good thing and when the Sun is too strong or afflicted in a chart, it can push someone toward ego or the opposite and give a complete lack of self confidence.

Before getting into symbolism, let’s explore what the Sun is physically. The Sun is a yellow dwarf star made of superheated plasma. It’s massive beyond anything we can really grasp, and still not even close to the largest star in the universe. The surface reaches temperatures around ten thousand degrees, while the core burns at millions of degrees hotter. Every planet in our solar system moves in relationship to the Sun, and life on Earth exists because of that balance.

The Sun takes about 365 days to complete its journey through the zodiac, spending roughly a month in each sign. Mercury and Venus are always close to the Sun in the chart. Mercury stays within about 28 degrees of the Sun, and Venus within about 48 degrees. The Sun fuels everything in our solar system, from planets and ecosystems to even life itself. And like all stars, one day it will probably burn out and destroy our solar system. Then again...it's the universe. It doesn't exactly care what we think is going to happen.

Understanding Grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It’s also important to understand that there isn’t much that can be learned from looking at just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is incredibly layered, and every piece works together to form a complete picture. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but it provides an important foundation.

With the Sun, we’re looking at how identity and responsibility move through a person’s life. Where the Sun sits in a chart shows where a person expresses their inner light. The Sun also relates to ambition, confidence, reputation, authority, and a person's relationship with father figures or power in general. Working with Surya is about paying attention to how you carry your own light. At its highest expression, the Sun teaches us how to shine without burning ourselves out or overpowering those around us.
