The Moon in Vedic Astrology

We started the year with the king of the sky, the Sun. Now it’s time to talk about the Moon. While the Sun represents our identity and how we shine in the world, the Moon takes us inward. It rules the mind and emotions as well as the inner world. The Moon is one of the most important grahas in Vedic astrology. An entire chart can be read from the Moon alone, and many daily predictions are based on its transits.

Before getting into the symbolism, let’s talk about the Moon physically. The Moon formed about 4.5 billion years ago after a massive collision between the early Earth and a Mars-sized body. The debris from that impact eventually came together to form the Moon we see today. It measures about 2,159 miles across and takes about 27.3 days to orbit the Earth.

Like the Sun, the Moon isn't technically a planet, but it is considered a graha. Scientifically, it's Earth's only natural satellite. As it orbits the Earth, we see its familiar cycle of waxing and waning, and in Vedic astrology that cycle can add another layer of interpretation to a birth chart. The Moon can also pass through Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse

Let’s explore what the Moon represents in a chart.

Understanding Grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It’s also important to understand that there isn’t much that can be learned from looking at just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is incredibly layered, and every piece works together to form a complete picture. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but it provides an important foundation.

The Moon represents the mind. While the Sun shows our identity, the Moon reveals our emotional nature and the way we experience life internally. Because the Moon rules the mind, practices like mindfulness and meditation are believed to strengthen it. In Vedic philosophy, learning to quiet the mind is one of the first steps toward understanding ourselves.
