The Three Gunas

In Vedic astrology, every planet, zodiac sign, and Nakshatra carries a specific Guna. A Guna is a fundamental quality. It describes the condition under which energy operates. Everything moves through these three qualities: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. I think understanding the Gunas is one of the biggest "aha" moments in Vedic astrology. Once they clicked for me, I stopped seeing planets as simply "good" or "bad." I started seeing the condition the energy was operating from.

Here’s a rundown:

Sattva - Sattva is the Guna of balance, wisdom, and clarity. It represents purity, understanding, and higher awareness. That does not make it God's favorite or somehow "better" than the other two. It's simply one expression of consciousness.

Sattva is associated with the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, the signs Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer, and Leo, and the final nine Nakshatras: Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.

Rajas - Rajas is movement. It's the desire to create, achieve, experience, and engage with life. Rajas is associated with Brahma, the creator of the physical universe, so naturally it pushes us toward action. I actually think Rajas gets a bad reputation sometimes because people confuse desire with greed. They're not the same thing. In this life, enjoyment isn't evil or something we're supposed to avoid. It's part of being human. Rajas is what gets us out of bed, helps us chase our goals, and reminds us that life is meant to be lived.

Rajas is associated with Mercury and Venus, the signs Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Libra, and the first nine Nakshatras: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, and Ashlesha.

Tamas - Tamas is probably the most misunderstood of the three Gunas. It's associated with Lord Shiva, the force of destruction and transformation. That sounds intimidating until you realize destruction is what makes new life possible. Without Tamas, nothing would ever stop. Which means nothing would ever change. Tamas can absolutely show up as laziness, resistance, darkness, or destruction. But it also allows us to rest, let go, and transform.

Tamas is associated with Mars, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu, the signs Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Aquarius, and the middle nine Nakshatras: Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, and Jyeshtha.

One analogy from my favorite astrologer, Kapiel Raaj, completely changed the way I understood the Gunas.

Think about a tree.

A tree is Sattva because it simply exists in its natural state.

A tree can give Rajas through the enjoyment of its shade, its fruit, or everything it provides.

But a tree can also be Tamas because it can fall over and kill you.

😂

I know that's a dramatic example, but I've always loved it because it reminds us that nothing in nature is purely one thing. Every part of creation has the potential to nourish, inspire, or transform depending on how we experience it.
