Aries in Vedic Astrology

We've officially made it through the planets, which means it's time to move on to the zodiac signs and houses. This is where astrology really starts coming together. If you've spent any amount of time on Kashner's Vault, you already know I have a slight obsession with archetypes, so this is where I really start having fun. When I sat down to write this series, I thought about what I would want to read if I were just getting into astrology. At first, it was very informational. Then I looked at it and thought... Nah. That ain't me.

I don't just memorize the zodiac. I spend way too much time wondering why. Why is it in this order? Why is Aries ruled by Mars and not Rahu? Why this? Why that? If I'm being honest, I don't even really use astrology for prediction. I kind of like that life still has a little mystery. I'd rather spend my time asking why these energies are the way they are. I swear I'm like a mad scientist.

I also don't want this series to feel like a textbook because, if I'm being honest...these are my notes. LOL. I'm not trying to impress anyone with how much I know. I want to inspire you to stay curious. In fact, I'll just put it out there now. I'm not an expert on anything. I'm a researcher and an observer, and that's exactly how I want you to read these articles. So instead of giving you the same descriptions you've probably read a hundred times already, I want to leave you with one thought provoking idea for each sign. That's much more me. Don't worry, all the informational stuff is still at the bottom if that's what you're looking for.

Let's talk about Aries.

So let me go back to something I wrote in my little ramble earlier. I said I spend way too much time asking why, and I wasn't kidding. Why is Aries ruled by Mars and not Rahu? Or any other planet for that matter? What makes this Martian sign the perfect candidate to go first? Those are the kinds of questions I love asking because I think they help us understand astrology on a much deeper level than simply memorizing keywords.

When I really sat and thought about it, Mars was the only planet that made sense for Aries to initiate something as profound as the zodiac. It's also interesting that Aries was historically aligned with the Spring Equinox, when the Earth begins waking back up after winter. Whether that symbolism shaped the zodiac or the zodiac reflects something even deeper is a rabbit hole for another day... but I definitely think about it.

Now imagine if Virgo had been the first sign. 😂

We'd still be in the planning phase. Nothing would ever be good enough to begin because there would always be one more thing to improve. Capricorn would probably spend twenty years drawing up a business plan first. I mean, even the other Mars-ruled sign expresses its Martian energy very differently because Scorpio would question everyone's motives before taking the first step. Every sign brings something essential to the zodiac, but I can't think of a better place to begin than Aries. Aries just... moves. It doesn't need every answer before taking the first step.

That doesn’t mean Aries never overthinks, or that other signs can’t be incredibly brave. I just believe every new start calls for a bit of Martian energy. Before we can improve, protect, understand, or perfect anything, someone has to be willing to take the first step. Enter Aries.
