Aries in Vedic Astrology

Now that we have learned all about the planets, it’s time to look at the houses and the zodiac signs so we can start connecting the dots of reading and truly understanding the birth chart. As we talked about in our last blog, the purpose of astrology was never solely predictive, but rather a way to understand the karmas of your life, your soul patterns and lessons, and eventually merge with consciousness. There are many layers to astrology, but at the core, you have the planets, the houses, and the zodiac. The zodiac itself is based on the path the Sun appears to travel across the sky, known as the ecliptic. This is the band along which all planetary motion is observed from Earth. The zodiac divides this path into twelve equal sections, each representing a different type of energy.

The houses are different. They are not fixed in the sky like the zodiac. This is why the houses shift depending on where and when you are born, while the zodiac remains consistent along the ecliptic. In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is aligned with the actual constellations in the sky. It accounts for the gradual shift of the Earth's axis over time, which causes the zodiac to move. This shift is known as precession. Because of this, Vedic placements are different from those used in tropical astrology. It's so interesting how attached people get to their tropical Sun sign. I've pulled charts and downright offended people when their placements changed. They often say, "No way, I'm totally a blah blah, not XYZ."

There are so many things that influence a single placement. You may no longer be a Gemini Sun, but you could have Mercury in the first house.

The zodiac always follows the same order. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. While the houses are set based on what sign is rising in the east at the time of birth, Aries will always have a natural connection to the first house. Taurus to the second, Gemini to the third, and so on. Because of this, Aries and the first house share similar energy, but they are not the same. The sign shows how the energy manifests. The house shows where it manifests. Without giving too much away, here is an example. Aries brings passion, creation, and energy. Aries in the first house brings that energy into you, as a person. In the second house, it brings it into your family and resources. In the third, into your communication. We will explore the houses later. For now, we are focusing on the signs, or Rashis as they are called in Vedic terminology.

Aries - “I AM”

Aries, or Mesha in Vedic astrology, is the first zodiac sign and is concerned with initiation. Every zodiac sign serves a purpose, and Aries begins the journey. It is the force that takes the first step. While Taurus preserves, Aries acts. Heavy Aries placements often manifest as courage and a strong desire to move life forward. These qualities come from its ruling planet, Mars.

Aries is the first of the three fire signs and represents the spark. Before anything can be maintained or perfected, it first has to begin. Aries is the energy that gets the wheel turning. It is Rajas in nature, giving it a strong desire for action. Aries is symbolized by the Ram, a creature known for charging forward despite obstacles. Whether that obstacle should be charged at is sometimes another conversation entirely.

Mars finds its Mooltrikona here because the sign supports its natural desire to take action. The Sun is exalted in Aries because it is the point in the zodiac where individuality emerges with strength and confidence. Saturn is debilitated here because its desire for patience often conflicts with Aries' desire to act first and figure the rest out later

Significators: Head, brain, face, body, physical vitality, life force, beginnings, initiation, action, movement, drive, ambition, courage, bravery, independence, self-interest, individuality, ego, identity, leadership, competition, victory, conquest, risk-taking, adventure, exploration, pioneers, trailblazers, entrepreneurs, athletes, warriors, soldiers, weapons, combat, conflict, challenges, impulsiveness, impatience, aggression, temper, passion, desire, motivation, survival, instinct, decisiveness, speed, urgency, physical activity, exercise, strength, stamina, injury, accidents, cuts, burns, scars, surgery, machinery, tools, engines, fire, heat, sparks, youth, confidence, assertiveness, and taking the first step.

Aries Through the Big Three:

Aries Sun:

The Sun represents the self, so Aries Suns often have a strong need to live life on their own terms. They usually aren't interested in following a path just because someone else says they should. This placement tends to learn through experience, which means they often have to try things for themselves before they believe it. Sitting around waiting for life to happen is rarely their style. If there's a door, Aries would rather open it than wonder what's behind it.

Aries Moon:

The Moon represents the mind and emotions. Aries Moons tend to experience their feelings in real time. If they're angry, you'll probably know it. If they're excited, you'll definitely know it. This placement rarely enjoys sitting with emotions for long because its instinct is usually to do something about the problem. The challenge for Aries Moon isn't expressing how they feel. It's learning that not every battle needs to be fought and not every frustration requires immediate action.

Aries Ascendant:

The Ascendant represents how we move through the world. Aries Ascendants often approach life as if they're being dropped into the middle of the story and expected to figure it out as they go. They tend to trust action more than planning and experience more than advice. While this can occasionally land them in situations they probably could have avoided, it also gives them the courage to go places that other people spend years talking themselves out of.
