Thinking About Galileo
I want to talk about one of my favorite historical icons, Galileo Galilei, and why I think he is still so important to the scientific and spiritual community today. He is basically the patron saint of scientific mystics. A man who looked at the sky through instruments instead of just faith and still ended up touching God. If you love physics, astronomy, or astrology, this name has probably floated through your world at least once. Galileo was genuinely innovative and seriously ahead of his time. His way of thinking reshaped how humans relate to the universe itself.
Before Galileo, people believed the Earth sat still at the center of everything. This view came from everyday observation and the teachings of thinkers like Aristotle and Ptolemy. Their ideas shaped how the universe was understood for centuries. The idea that the Sun might be at the center had already been introduced by Nicolaus Copernicus, but it was treated more like an absurd abstract idea than a serious claim. What mattered at the time was where an idea came from, not whether it could be tested or measured. “Truth” came from belief systems and ideas that were passed down, and that was usually the end of the conversation. Religion over science. Before Galileo, truth was accepted, not questioned.
Galileo challenged that by pointing a telescope at the sky and letting what he saw speak for itself.
Once the telescope entered the equation, all the ideas given to us were able to be tested and challenged. While Hans Lippershey invented the telescope, Galileo was the one who turned it into a scientific instrument. He improved it and used it to study the sky. Night after night, the same sky could be examined with the same tool. This meant that patterns could be tracked. For the first time, claims about the heavens had to survive the opposition of direct observation. Galileo slowly exposed details in the beliefs that were passed down. All because he looked up. ❤️
What I love about Galileo is the way he paid attention. He didn’t look at the universe to confirm what he already believed. He looked to see what was actually there. He was so open minded. He trusted that observing the world more closely would lead to better understanding, not less meaning. That is what made his work so important. He wasn’t scared that what he believed would unravel, but instead just wanted to understand one of life’s mysteries.
Galileo showed us that curiosity and reverence do not have to be opposites. He was brave enough to ask how and why at a time when doing so was genuinely dangerous. He was literally put on house arrest because Catholicism did not approve of what he was saying, and they even banned books he had written, even though what he was speaking was true. Exploring consciousness and ways of connecting to something beyond what society says is acceptable can still feel scary. Galileo inspires me to do it anyway.

This way of approaching the universe has always made sense to me. I am not drawn to blind faith, and I am not interested in reducing everything down until it loses its meaning either. I just want to understand how things work while still staying connected to how they feel. Whether I am looking at the sky, studying astrology, or thinking about how time moves in patterns, I am doing the same thing Galileo did. I am paying attention and letting understanding grow from what is actually there.
We still live in a world where many ideas are passed down instead of looked at closely. People are often told what to believe before they are encouraged to really observe. That is why Galileo still matters. His real legacy is not just about heliocentrism, but also about giving permission to ask questions without losing wonder.
Isn’t that just the cutest story of why he’s such an inspiration to me? Anyway, here’s a list of facts about him also.
His inventions, all in one place: an improved refracting telescope, a geometric and military compass, a thermoscope which later became the thermometer, a proportional compass, a hydrostatic balance, early pendulum timekeeping ideas, and a refined microscope prototype. Yeesh. Busy guy.
Galileo did not invent the telescope, but he saw its potential immediately and upgraded it so much that it became a serious scientific tool.
He was the first person to actually sit with the sky night after night and take notes, instead of just glancing once and guessing.
He discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter, which was a big problem for the idea that everything revolved around Earth. Those moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, and they are now known as the Galilean moons.
He noticed Venus had phases like the Moon, which only makes sense if Venus is circling the Sun.
Galileo ruined the idea of a “heaven” (the sky and its celestial bodies) by showing the Moon had mountains, valleys, and rough terrain.
He spotted sunspots and tracked them moving, proving the Sun rotated.
Before science, Galileo studied art. That is why he was so good at noticing shadows and depth when looking at the Moon.
He wrote in Italian instead of Latin on purpose so normal people could read his work, not just scholars and clergy.
Galileo believed the universe followed math, and that numbers were not random.
He challenged the idea that heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones, which later helped shape modern physics.
He was fascinated by pendulums and timekeeping, and that helped influence the development of accurate clocks.
Galileo argued that the Bible explains spiritual meaning, not physical mechanics, which made a lot of people very uncomfortable.
He was put on trial by the Roman Inquisition and sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.
His books were banned, but he kept working anyway, I love this because it shows curiosity does not stop just because you are told to be quiet. He didn’t keep going for recognition. He kept going because it was his purpose.
Galileo eventually went blind.
He named Jupiter’s moons after powerful patrons to keep his work funded, because even geniuses have to pay bills.
Anyway. That’s why Galileo means so much to me.
