Mercury in Vedic Astrology

So far in our graha series, we've explored the Sun, Moon, and Mars. Now we come to Mercury, or Budha in Vedic astrology. Budha rules how information moves through the mind. This is how we think, speak, learn, trade ideas, and make sense of the world around us.

Physically, Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It's the smallest planet in our solar system, about 3,000 miles across, with a rocky, cratered surface that looks a lot like our Moon. Mercury has no moons of its own and very little atmosphere, causing temperatures to swing from scorching heat in daylight to freezing cold at night. Because it's so close to the Sun, Mercury moves quickly through the zodiac. It usually spends between two and four weeks in each sign, depending on its retrograde cycles. Mercury retrogrades about three to four times each year, with each retrograde lasting around three weeks.

Exaltation: Virgo - Mercury is exalted in Virgo because the mind becomes sharp, practical, and able to organize information with clarity.
Debilitation: Pisces - Mercury is debilitated in Pisces because the mind loses structure and becomes easily pulled into confusion or fantasy.
Mooltrikona: Virgo - This is where the mind becomes clear, precise, and able to turn information into something useful.

Understanding grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It is also important to say that there is not much that can be taught with just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is so layered that the details must come together to form a clear picture. Please understand that this is far less than the tip of the iceberg, but it is important to understand in order to build a strong foundation.
