Budha in Jyotish
So far in our graha series, Surya, Chandra, and Mangal. Now we come to Budha who is Mercury. Budha rules how information moves through the mind. This is how we think, speak, trade ideas, and make sense of what we know.
Physically, Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It’s the smallest planet in our part of the solar system, about 3,000 miles across, with a surface that looks a lot like our Moon. Rocky, cratered, and exposed. Mercury has no moons of its own. Its temperatures are extreme, swinging from intense heat in direct sunlight to deep cold in shadow, since it doesn’t have much of an atmosphere to hold warmth. Mercury moves fast because its so close to the sun. It doesn’t spend the same amount of time in each sign, usually somewhere between two and four weeks depending on its retrograde cycles. Mercury retrogrades about four times a year, each lasting around twenty days. After the Moon, it’s the fastest moving graha in the chart, both in the sky and in the psyche.
This is the Deity Budha
Budha rides the lion because the mind must be strong enough to command itself. Mercury governs thought and communication, and the lion reflects mental authority rather than emotional impulse.

Budha’s origin story is beyond complicated, and that complexity explains Mercury’s shifting nature in astrology. Budha was born from a forbidden union between Chandra, the Moon, and Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, Jupiter. Chandra became caught up in desire and carried Tara away, causing a scandal among the gods. After she was returned, Tara gave birth to Budha. For a while, no one knew who the father was. Jupiter chose to raise the child. Jupiter represents wisdom and higher meaning. The Moon represents emotion and longing. Budha carries the quick, imaginative mind of Chandra, but was raised under Jupiter’s guidance. This is why Mercury represents intelligence rather than wisdom. He thinks fast and adapts easily, but his mind is neutral. It can serve truth or self interest depending on how it’s used.
Budha married Ila, a being who shifted between masculine and feminine forms. Their bond was fluid and unconventional. Through Ila, Budha became associated with duality and movement between states. This is why Mercury governs language and translation. Budha is never fixed. He moves between perspectives. Taken together, these stories show how Mercury operates in a chart. Budha is born from desire and shaped by wisdom. He carries that duality into thought and speech. This makes Mercury the graha of learning and communication, but also of cleverness and hidden intent, depending on how consciously it’s used.

Understanding grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It is also important to say that there is not much that can be taught with just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is so layered that the details must come together to form a clear picture. Please understand that this is far less than the tip of the iceberg, but it is important to understand in order to build a strong foundation.
When Mercury is strong, thinking feels quick and flexible. Learning comes easier and communication can flow. When Mercury is challenged, the mind gets noisy. The brain works harder but with less clarity. As the messenger of the grahas, Mercury sits in between. He translates awareness into something usable. He shows how we interact with information and meaning in daily life. When Budha is in balance, the mind becomes a tool instead of a trap, supporting life rather than complicating it.
