Venus in Vedic Astrology

The next graha in our series is Venus, or Shukra in Vedic astrology. Most people know Venus as the planet of love, beauty, money, and luxury. While those things are certainly part of Shukra, they barely scratch the surface. Shukra was the guru of the Asuras, not the Devas. Right away, I knew there had to be much more to this graha than romance, and Shukra is probably one of the best examples of why Vedic astrology and modern astrology don't always tell the same story.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and Earth's closest planetary neighbor. It's about 7,521 miles across, but it is the hottest planet in our solar system. Interesting since Mercury is closer. Venus moves through roughly one zodiac sign each month and retrogrades about every 18 months for around 43 days. A single day on Venus lasts longer than its entire year. Thaaaaa fuhhh. It also shines so brightly in our sky that it's called the Morning Star or Evening Star. Through a telescope, Venus goes through phases much like the Moon because it orbits between the Earth and the Sun. Fun fact: one of the first people to observe these phases was one of my favorite historical icons, Galileo. ❤️

Understanding Grahas is less about memorizing meanings and more about recognizing how their energies influence us. It is also important to say that there is not much that can be taught with just one planet, sign, house, or nakshatra. Vedic astrology is so layered that the details must come together to form a clear picture, so please understand that this is way less than the tip of the iceberg, but important to understand in order to have a strong foundation.
